This 20 hour course is designed for the utility operator as a general overview of math related problems associated with the water and wastewater utility field. The student will gain valuable knowledge and learn proven math skills, increase their ability to perform complicated calculations and gain confidence in solving math problems. This is accomplished by providing practice problems throughout the course that requires manipulating or re-arranging formulas to solve for unknown variables.

Course contents includes simple to very complex math problems dealing with the following: math calculations, conversion factors, strategies for solving word problems, multi-step problems, calculating area, volume, capacity of tanks and pipe lines, chemical dosages, demands and residuals, velocity and quantity of water, detention time, filter and backwash rates, weir overflow rates, hydraulic and organic loading, F/M (food to microorganism) ratio, and sludge age, chemical dosages, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and digester loading, Raw Activated Sludge (RAS) and Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) pumping rates, pump and motor efficiencies, Affinity Law and the relationship between motor, brake and water horse powers.

This class has been approved by TCEQ as an “Elective” course for Water and Wastewater license.
